BENTONVILLE, Ark. —

Once Arkansans get out of the cold snap, the Bentonville Garden Club said it’s the perfect time to start planting your gardens for the season.

Susan Schallhorn with the garden club said the first step is picking a spot and creating your garden bed.

Next, make sure you have good soil.

Then, you can pick out and plant your crops.

“If you have your bed, the sun, the soil, the seeds, and the water, you will have what you want,” Schallhorn said.

Schallhorn said some easy crops to grow are lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes.

She said something that is almost always fool-proof is herbs.

“You can’t go wrong with mint and herbs in pots. You can roll them in your house or put them right at your back porch,” Schallhorn said.

If you’re feeling adventurous, Schallhorn said you can plant melons because they grow well in the climate and soil in Arkansas.
