Burlington plans to bring back and expand the outdoor patio program this year, but the look could be a little prettier.
Business owners will be encouraged to apply for the patio program to help get the city’s economy back on its feet in these post-pandemic days. The patios would again appear once the weather gets warmer on city streets.
A report that will go before councillors next week indicates outdoor patios for restaurants, cafes and other businesses are helpful at building citizen engagement, community health and culture as well as allowing residents to boost traffic at local businesses.
One of the major changes that could take place, if the proposed program is approved, is the number of businesses that will be able to up on local streets.
As well as established restaurants other establishments that may be allowed to have patios include:
- Banquet Halls
- Community institutions, except those in a residential zone
- Convenience/specialty food stores
- Convention/conference centres
- Entertainment establishments
- Food processing and manufacturing
- Hotels
- Night clubs
- Recreational establishments
- Supermarkets/grocery stores
As well, the City is also looking at ways to make the barriers around patios along streets more attractive.
One plan calls for painting the barriers in different colours or using colourful stickers. Another option, which may be implemented long-term, could be the purchase of new barriers that have more of an artistic design.
While Burlington contemplates the 2023 patio program, it hopes to come up with a permanent patio plan for 2024 and beyond.
