Cheap hack to clean your patio without a power washer is so easy

March 5, 2023 by Staff Reporter

As we get closer and closer to the summer months, many of us are dreaming of the days when it’s finally mild enough to relocate back to the garden.

If you are anything like us, during the pandemic you will have learned how relaxing it can be to spend some down time in the comfort of your own back garden, and we haven’t looked back since.

Unfortunately, it’s something that the unpredictable Irish weather doesn’t permit all year round.

Thankfully, as the weather improves over the coming months, it’s finally time to get started on bringing the back garden back to life.

Whether you love hunkering down with a good book and glass of vino out the back or firing up the barbecue for an outdoor dinner, it’s time to get it back in order!

If you are looking to spruce up your back garden in time for summer then look no further. There’s nothing better than having a relaxing space to enjoy the albeit rare good weather without having to leave the comfort of your own home, but sometimes the maintenance can be daunting.

If your patio is in need of some TLC after a year out of action, we have some tips that may help.

Simply Paving says we don’t need fancy or expensive products to get the patio back in order, you can actually use some cheap household items and get the same results.

“One of the most effective patio cleaning products is good old-fashioned washing-up liquid mixed with warm tap water,” the experts told the Express.

“All you need to do is squirt a little washing up liquid into the base of a bucket and fill with warm water.

“Using this soapy mixture, start from the corners and splash a little water onto your patio. Then, grab a hard-bristled brush and scrub. Repeat this splashing and scrubbing routine until you’ve covered your whole patio.

“Clean the dirty water away with a bucket of clean water, ensuring it flows into a drainage point.”

The pros said scrubbing diagonally is key as this will give a more gentle clean, and you can even use vinegar:

“White vinegar is safe to use as a patio cleaner – in fact, it has many benefits as it is environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and non-chemical.

“Tailored to tough cleaning jobs, white vinegar is a good cleaning method if you are freshening up a very dirty patio.

“To clean with white vinegar, mix it with water in a one to one ratio in a bucket. Pour your vinegar and water solution over your patio and leave the vinegar to work its way into the paving slabs for 30 minutes to an hour.

“Then, clean the dirty water away with a bucket of clean water.”

However they warn against using this method to clean limestone pavers as the acid can damage these surfaces:

“Most paving types need little more than a bucket of warm soapy water to maintain their pristine sheen.”

Have you tried any of these out? Let us know if they worked!
