‘If you live here, give back’: Old Kona Airport Park pavilions get facelift

January 20, 2023 by Staff Reporter

The beach pavilions at Old Kona Airport Park are getting a facelift this week thanks to the donation of time and materials by three local companies.

The project is the brainchild of Jeff Fear, owner of Fearless Painting and founder of nonprofit Big Island Waveriders Against Drugs, who organizes beach cleanups annually.

“We are doing it for the children and to give back to the community,” said Fear. “We are sick and tired of it looking like s—t.”

The pavilions are receiving new roofs and a fresh coat of paint. In addition to Fearless Painting, ABC Painting provided materials and labor and Mauna Kea Roofing installed new roofs on the shelters. Sherwin Williams donated the paint.

Fear estimated the project cost was about $90,000, yet did not cost the taxpayers a dime.

“Are we going to leave this looking like it did for our kids and grandkids? The answer is no,” said fear.

In addition to the beach cleanup, scheduled for March, Fear said every year he would like to do one project if he can get the community together and involved.

“It’s all about giving back,” he said. “If you want to live here, you have to give back. We are proud to be a part of this community. We just ask people to take care of it, because the county doesn’t do anything.”

ABC owner Richard Ramirez Jr. said he was there to donate his time to help out the community.

“I’m here for the people of the community. I’m happy to be involved for something so special.”

For future projects, Fear is calling out other contractors.

“Be a part of this team. If you live here, give back.”
