I’m a gardening pro – here’s how to protect your plants from pesky bugs, all you’ll need is this £2 item

May 27, 2023 by Staff Reporter

A GARDENING pro has revealed the super easy way she protects her plants and home-grown veggies from pests – and all you’ll need is one bargain buy.

With the warmer weather finally on its way, many of us are taking the opportunity to get out in our gardens.

But despite our hard work, the pests are coming out to play too.

Luckily Kia has come up with a genius way to prevent them from attacking your plants – by using small mesh jewellery bags.

She pops her flowers or individual vegetables inside the bag before securing them around the stem of their plants, preventing bugs and insects from getting to them.

Kia said: “I wish I knew about this cheap gardening hack when I first got started. It would have saved me a lot of time and money.

“If you’re not using these mesh drawstring bags, you’re really missing out.

“I use them for two purposes – one, they protect my vegetables from the pests or the birds getting them.

“Secondly, if your plants are going to seed, like this coriander plant right here, I just put the mesh bags right over the flowers, let them dry out and then I can collect the seeds that way.

“I also keep reusing these mesh bags so I never throw them out, and they cost me less than $10 on Amazon.”

Shoppers can pick these up from various retailers, including Shein and Amazon, with prices starting from as little as £1.99.

Fans loved her savvy idea, with the video gaining more than 31,700 likes and 375,400 views.

Known online as @kia_urbangardener, the gardening ‘enthusiast’ regularly shares her green-fingered tips with her 38,100 followers.

In the comments, TikTokkers shared their reactions, with one writing: “Now this is genius.”

“I knew hoarding these from my Etsy packages would come in handy,” joked another.

A third shared: “These worked so well with our tomatoes and peppers, but the squirrels smashed all the blackberries inside the bags!”

Someone else put: “You smarty pants.”
