RAPID CITY, S.D. – With the arrival of spring, Rapid City residents are eager to start gardening again, but not everyone has the luxury of a large garden. The Rapid City Public Library recently invited a master gardener to share tips on how to grow a successful garden in limited space and in the harsh conditions of the area.
Small Space Gardening Tips:
Some of the more basic tips included:
- Effectively use the space available
- Start with a simple grow medium mixture
- Grow plants in succession for a higher yield
However, for beginner gardeners, the most important tip is to make the garden small and manageable.
Janet Wernicke, the president of the Pennington County Master Gardeners Group said, “If you’re putting together your very, very first garden, make it small and manageable. If you go with an overly large garden, too many plants, too much space, you won’t be able to maintain it.”
