Mercer Botanic Gardens reopens visitor center 6 years after Hurricane Harvey

January 23, 2023 by Staff Reporter

After being damaged during Hurricane Harvey in 2017, the newly renovated Mercer Botanic Gardens Visitor Center is now open, according to a Jan. 19 news release from Harris County Precinct 3.

The 3,100-square-foot visitor center—which will be used to host educational gardening activities and events—cost $875,000 to renovate, according to the news release. The space now features new flooring, windows, storage space and an updated kitchen.

“Mercer Botanic Gardens is one of the crown jewels of our park system in Harris County. … It’s been quite the journey to get to this point, and we strive to build on the legacy of this park and create spaces people can visit and peacefully enjoy,” Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey said in a statement.

The visitor center originally opened in 1986 and is located at 22306 Aldine Westfield Road, Humble. Mercer Botanic Gardens, which spans 180 acres, features daylilies, endangered species, ferns, herbs and tropical plants for visitors to enjoy. 713-274-4160. www.pct3.com/mbg
