Camposol’s D Sector Gardening and Community Group finish pavement after Christmas Grinch steals paving slabs
The Camposol D Sector Gardening and Community Group, who are undertaking numerous recent projects on Sector D, volunteered to help Costa Calida Age Concern after visitors were struggling while crossing the unpaved terrain outside the Age Concern Social Centre on Avenida de los Covachos in Camposol’s Sector C.
No pavement was ever installed outside the Age Concern Social Centre and as a result, since the Social Centre opened just over a year ago, elderly visitors (the majority) have found it difficult to negotiate their way over the rough ground and gravel, so the D Sector Gardening Group volunteered to help out. Funds were raised and the building supplies consisting of paving slabs, sand gravel and cement were delivered to the site just before Christmas, when they were secured inside the walled Social Centre in readiness to be laid shortly after Christmas.
When the Gardening Group volunteers arrived early on the morning of December 27 to start work, much to their astonishment they found that 40 of the paving slabs had been stolen, nearly half the total. Obviously the work could not proceed and the volunteers returned to their homes disappointed and angry that anyone could steal from a charity over the Christmas period, and probably saddened that this could happen during the season of “good will to all men” while also wondering if or when more funds could be raised to replace the slabs.
But the Christmas Spirit prevailed and an anonymous donor contacted the Gardening Group Chairman volunteering to pay to replace the stolen slabs, which were promptly ordered. On January 3 the volunteers returned with their faith in human nature somewhat restored to complete the project.
The Social Centre has proved very popular since its opening, being a focal point for elderly residents to meet for various events including regular coffee mornings, games days, sewing circles and health and wellness get togethers to name but a few. One-off social and fundraising events are also arranged.
Visitors to the Centre will now find it easier to access the facility because of the selfless volunteers and generous benefactor and dispite the despicable actions of the Camposol Christmas Grinch.
