North and South Rivers Watershed’s Gardening Green Expo in Scituate

March 2, 2023 by Staff Reporter

SCITUATE – The first post COVID-19 event for the North and South Rivers Watershed Association will feature Zoom lectures, prizes and a presentation from a New York Times bestselling author.

The Gardening Green Expo will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 18 at Kennedy’s Country Gardens, 85 Chief Justice Cushing Highway (Route 3A), Scituate. The event is free and family friendly.

Zoom lectures are scheduled for Monday, March 13, through Friday, March 17, and will have guest speakers focused on sustainably growing plants.

“We’re trying to promote the event of climate-wise gardening, which uses less water,” said Lori Wolfe, WaterSmart program manager and North and South Rivers Watershed Association director of marketing and communications.

One of the featured presenters will be author Doug Tallamy, who advocates for home gardens and landscaping that preserve or provide habitats for native species. Tallamy is a professor in the department of entomology and wildlife ecology at the University of Delaware. He will speak Thursday, March 16, during the Zoom lecture.

His second book, “Nature’s Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation That Starts in Your Yard,” urges homeowners to take conservation into their own hands.

At the Gardening Green Expo, visitors will be able to stroll through the greenhouses of Kennedy’s Country Gardens. Vendors will sell products and services for lawns and gardens. Prizes will include a gift basket from Edible Southeastern Massachusetts, a rain barrel, seeds from Holly Hill Farm in Cohasset, a garden plot and a $100 gift card from Blue Stem Natives in Norwell.

The “Ask a Master Gardener” team will answer horticultural questions and test soil. There will also be talks by local experts and environmental organizations. In conjunction with the expo, the North and South Rivers Watershed Association will be taking orders for rain barrels and composters again this year.

WaterSmart and the watershed association are organizing the event.

WaterSmart is a nonprofit partnership between the North and South Rivers Watershed Association and 12 towns on the South Shore: Cohasset, Duxbury, Hanover, Hingham, Hull, Kingston, Marshfield, Norwell, Pembroke, Rockland, Scituate and Weymouth. WaterSmart has educated thousands of local children, adults and businesses on water conservation, stormwater pollution, where water comes from and how to care for it.
