Over 300,000 people took in 40 pavilions at Folklorama

August 21, 2023 by Staff Reporter

Well over a quarter of a million people kept dozens of pavilions busy for over 800 shows the past two weeks at the world’s largest and longest-running multicultural festival*.

Organizers of Winnipeg’s Folklorama festival say that 301,460 people came through the doors of 40 pavilions between August 6 and 19 of 2023. That’s an increase of five per cent, and includes over 23,000 children under the age of 12 who received free admission.

“On behalf of the Board of Directors and Operations Team, thank you to all our 16,000 volunteers, our members, partners, funders, and YOU, our guests, for enabling generations to keep sharing their culture, traditions and the stories that weave Manitobans together,” states Teresa Cotroneo, Executive Director, Folklorama. “We look forward to seeing you for Folklorama 53, August 4th-17th, 2024!

Guests took in a total of 874 fantastic shows, while 137 group tours visited from across Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and the U.S.

Organizers of the event say that while everyone catches their breath there are still plenty of opportunities to take in Foklorama every day of the year, including Folklorama at Home (yes, you can have a pavilion show up at your home); Folklorama at School; Folklorama at Play; and Folklorama at Work.

You can find more info at the Folklorama website.

*(as determined in 2010 by CIOFF, the International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts).
