The cavalry museum in Saumur offers a fine and extensive ride through French military history, with a bit of editing for national pride. The glory of Austerlitz gets its own cabinet, bien sûr, but Waterloo is dealt with in one sentence on a display of Napoleon’s other campaigns. “If we don’t talk about it, it never happened” is the inference.
I’m tempted to take a similar view of the cricket at Lord’s this afternoon. The real one-day final is being played at Trent Bridge in a fortnight. Today Lord’s gets four teams dressed as crisp packets offering 16.4-over “cricketainment”. I’ll be watching Blackheath kick off their rugby season against Dorking instead.
