Marie Selby Botanical Gardens has announced that it will receive approximately $2.5 million through longtime volunteer Evelyn Mink’s Evelyn S. Mink Charitable Trust. The gift will be used to support Phase One construction of the gardens’ Master Plan and will name the Evelyn S. Mink Volunteer Suite in the new Plant Research Center that is part of the project. When the building opens next year, the suite named for Mink will house volunteer workstations, a lounge area, and the office of the volunteer coordinator.
The Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation has awarded a $1 million grant to Safe Children Coalition. The funds will be used to support the construction of a new youth shelter, including preliminary property development consultant costs, such as the project architect; all appropriate engineers; the systems consultant; and construction costs.
Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe has received a $35,000 strategic partnership grant from the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. The funds are to be allocated as follows: $15,000 for Stage of Discovery; $10,000 for the fall gala, “Groovin’ on the Soul Train”; $5,000 for WBTT’s celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; and $5,000 for WBTT’s spring fundraiser, the April Fools Fête.
The “Here4YOUth” initiative of the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation and Gulf Coast Community Foundation has awarded Wingspan Productions, Inc. a $25,000 grant from the Here4YOUth Mental Health Initiative. The grant will fund various aspects of Wingspan’s year-round educational initiative, including community screenings, discussions and talkbacks, partnerships with community organizations, social media, and resource materials to accompany the new film about mental health, Bridge to the Other Side.
Tidewell Foundation has received a $20,000 grant from the Wilson-Wood Foundation to support community grief services. Tidewell Hospice offers grief support for families of Tidewell patients following their loss. Services are also available to anyone in the community suffering a loss due to any cause, including a traumatic death, perinatal loss, or diagnosis of serious illness. Individual counseling with a grief specialist and specialized grief support groups are also available.
