SOUTHINGTON, CT — Following recent action from the town’s zoning board, it will be a bit more fun to stay at the YMCA camp in Southington, especially during extreme weather.
The Southington Planning and Zoning Commission last week unanimously approved an application filed by engineers hired by the Southington-Cheshire Community YMCA to build a large, covered pavilion at its camp facilty on 1000 East St.

Camp Sloper, the YMCA’s popular summer day camp program for children in the area, conducts daily operations in the summer, even when the weather is less than ideal.
As a result, the YMCA is seeking more space for days when rain strikes, as in a summer thunderstorm, or the summer mercury skyrockets.
The pavilion, a 2,100-square-foot covered concrete slab, will provide sheltered activities as well as temporary respite from the elements.
Mark Pooler, chief executive officer of the Southington-Cheshire Community YMCA, said the pavilion has been in the works for a while.
“This is primarily used at the day camp. We’re serving several hundred kids out there and we just need some additional rainy day space and this gets them out of the sun,” Pooler told PZC members March 7.
“It’s part of our master plan of development and conservation, along with our capital campaign that is going on with some of our improvement.”
Zoning officials had no problem supporting he proposal.
“It’s a great program, a great asset to our town,” Southington PZC Chairman Robert Hammersley said. “Glad to see that they’re growing their facility and providing that facility.”
