CARRIE: WE ARE KICKING OFF A NEW YEAR AT THE FARM. YOU HAVE A CONFESSION TO MAKE, SOMETHING YOU WANT TO WORK ON. >> I AM A PLANT HOARDER. AVA: I WOULD NEVER HAVE GUESSED. [LAUGHTER] >> WORKING IN A GARDEN STORE, THERE IS ALL KINDS OF THINGS YOU CAN TAKE HOME. THERE ARE OLD SEEDS TO GET RID OF. I HAVE 100 DAFFODIL BULBS AT HOME. I AM HOPING I CAN STILL GET THEM IN. AVA: THE GROUND HAS TO BE SOFT. >> RIGHT. YOU DO NOT WANT IT FROZEN AND YOU NEED 12 WEEKS OF DORMANCY. AVA: CUTTING IT CLOSE. >> BUT I’M KEEPING THEM IN THE COOL ROOM. AVA: IT IS NOW OR NEVER. >> AND I HAVE A PILE OF PERENNIALS THAT NEEDED TO BE PLANTED. AVA: I BOUGHT THESE AND NEVER GOT TO THEM. MAYBE THEY ARE 80-YEAR-OLD. HOW LONG DID THEY LAST? >> YOU CAN TAKE A PAPER TOWEL AND SEE IF THEY GERMINATE. BUT IT IS GOING TO GO DOWN. WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE SEED PACKET, IT WILL TELL YOU THE GERMINATION ON THE BACK. THEY HAVE TO BE LABELED THIS YEAR FOR US TO SELL THEM. ANY WE HAVE LEFT WE USUALLY GIVE TO THOSE THAT HAVE COMMUNITY GARDENS. AVA: MAYBE WE ARE STARTING THE NEW YEAR AND THAT IS A GOOD REMINDER THAT DOING GARDENING CAN TAKE PLANNING. YOU WANT TO LOOK AT THE DATES AND TIMES OF WHAT IS RIGHT. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE? >> MY PHONE — AVA: THIS IS YOUR JOURNAL. >> IT IS. I TAKE PICTURES OF PLANTS I MIGHT WANT TO ADD TO MY GARDEN AND I CAN SEE THE DATES THEY BLOOM. I HAVE A GARDEN THAT LOOKS PRETTY GOOD IN THE SUMMER AND FALL BECAUSE I AM NOT WORKING AS MANY HOURS. IN THE SPRING, EVERYTHING GETS PLANTED. I NEED TO GIVE MYSELF TIME AND SAY, ON MY DAY OFF, THE FIRST TWO HOURS, I AM GOING TO DO SOME PLANNING. AVA: MAYBE YOU HAVE A RESOLUTION YOU WANT TO USE MORE OF THE THINGS YOU GROW. MAYBE YOU WANT TO START AN HERB GARDEN. JENNIFER: >> I LIKE ITALIAN FOOD. — >> I LIKE ITALIAN FOOD. PARSLEY IS GRET FOR YOU ALL AROUND. I THINK FLAVORS IN YOUR FOOD ARE AMAZING. I DID NOT GROW UP LIKE THAT, WITH MY MOM USING THAT. YOU GO TO RESTAURANTS NOW AND IT IS AMAZING. I WANT TO TRY THAT MYSELF. AVA: MAYBE GROWING SOME HERBS COULD BE A KICK TO COOKING NEW FOODS AND TRY NEW FOODS. THAT IS A GREAT THING FOR THE NEW YEAR. >> ABSOLUELY. AVA: MAYBE SOME PRODUCTS TO HELP YOU KEEP TRACK OF THE WEATHER THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE ON KEEPING TRACK OF RAIN? >> A WEEKLY JOURNAL WOULD NOT HURT. MOST OF OUR PLANTS NEED AN INCH OF WATER A WEEK. IF WE GET INTO THE SUMMER AND WE ARE GETTING DROUGHT, YOUR LAWN IS GOING TO LOOK BAD. WE ARE NOT CONCERNED ABOUT THAT. BUT YOU WANT TO GET PLANTS WATER. AVA: GOOD TO KNOW. ONE INCH OF WATER A WEEK. THAT IS WHERE I COME IN. [LAUGHTER] IF WE HAVE NOT GOTTEN RAIN, YOU CAN DO YOUR OWN WATERING. THESE ARE ALL GREAT THINGS TO KICK OFF THE NEW YEAR. >> LET’S WORK ON THIS. AVA: I HAVE FAITH IN YOU. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US ON SUNDAY GARDENER. JENNIFER: IF YOU HAVE A GARDEN QUESTION YOU WANT ANSWERED, YOU CAN EMAIL THE TEAM.
