During the COVID-19 pandemic, when gathering outside was considered much safer, the city waived permit fees in a bid to make it easier for businesses to set up patio sections.
Those fees are now being waived for the third straight year, and new applications are being fast-tracked.
The permits are good for three years, meaning most restaurants did not need to reapply in 2023.
In a news release, the city said the program’s focus is on improved accessibility, safety and supporting small businesses.

Erin Chrusch, leader of business and local economy with the city, said improvements have been made to the program since 2021.
“It’s rare to get things right the first time you introduce a new program,” she said. “Since the seasonal patio program was introduced, the city has worked with businesses and other interested parties to assess and adjust the permit process.
“We keep incorporating that feedback and believe we are at a place where the process is clear and understood. It is a great example of what can happen when we all work together.”

“The city has embraced outdoor patios and so has Kensington,” she said in a news release. “Our patios bring vibrancy to our streets and the decorated concrete barricades and flowers in planters provide safety and beauty and whimsy to Kensington. We love our patios.”

The city works with businesses on locating the patios on public property, such as in parking lanes, while still ensuring there are ramps and boardwalks for pedestrians.
“Over the past three summers, we have made significant changes to the patio program to improve accessibility,” said Ravi Seera, manager of Mobility Operations. “We are committed to providing barrier-free, level access for all Calgarians to navigate around the patios.”
